John Chang, Brennan Jacobsen and Cory Mayfield led the Armada men's
team at Western Sectionals
|
The standout male swimmer
of the meet was Andrew Choi. Andrew qualified for the finals in four
events and achieved three new US Open cuts in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breast.
Andrew was the leading scorer for the Armada as the team chased the Zone team
title. On the women's side the leading scorer was Samantha Shellem, who
finaled in five events. The team's highest finish was achieved by Jessica
Marsh, who won the 1650 free in a head to head struggle that lasted for
seventeen minutes and six seconds before Jessica finally broke away.
The team ended up in
second place in the combined team title race.
Next up for the Armada was the
US Open in Seattle (substituting for the US National Championships due to the
World Trials earlier in the year). Kirstie Chen, Samantha Shellem and Andrew
Choi made the trip and did not disappoint. Both Kirstie and Samantha made it to
the finals to stand tall on the awards stand. Samantha Shellem's world
class swim in the 400 free, 4:10.9 was good for fourth and a spot on the US
National Junior team headed to Stockholm and Berlin in November. Sam also
finished 4th in the 800 free. Teammate Kirstie Chen also qualified for the
Championship finals, placing 7th in the 400 IM. Kirstie also placed 11th
in the 200 fly and 12th in the 200 IM.
The last stop on the
Championship trail was the US Junior Nationals. Brennan Jacobsen and
Jessica Marsh joined Kirstie and Sam for the meet. Jessica competed in the
200,400, 800 and 1500 free. Brennan provided some real highlights,
achieving best times in all four of his events, the 200 fly, 400 free, 800 free,
and 1500 free.
