This past weekend's Grand Challenge meet represented the first
serious effort of the long course season and a great test prior to the big meets
of summer.
The Armada men's team continues to improve and it showed at the Grand
Challenge this past weekend. Representing the Armada for our men's team
were: John Mendoza, Paul Mendoza, John Chang, Brennan Jacobsen, Matt Chong, Jaye
Chang, Michael Mayfield and Cory Mayfield. On the women's side we were
strongly represented by eight outstanding young ladies: Kylie Garcia, Maddie
Golison, Samantha Shellem, Kirstie Chen, Nikki Chang, Jessica Marsh, Kiersten
Shew and Alyssa Shew.
Best times at this time of year are unexpected
but we spent the weekend doing the unexpected. Samantha Shellem had
life-time bests in the 200 free, 400 free 100 back and 100 free. Jessica
Marsh had life-time bests in the 400 free and the 100 free. Maddie Golison
in the 200 IM, Kiersten Shew in the 100 fly, Alyssa Shew in the 100 free, 100
breast, and 200 breast. John Chang in the 200 free and 200 IM. Jaye
Chang in the 50, 100, and 200 free. Brennan Jacobsen in the 1500 free (8th place
overall), 100 fly and 200 IM. Matt Chong in the 100 breast and Cory
Mayfield in the 200 fly.
In addition to all the second swims in the Super
Four and the 'A' Final there were several second swims in the 'B' final. Those
were achieved by Alyssa Shew, Nikki Chang, Matt Chong and Brennan Jacobsen.
In addition to our own great performances there
were many superstars from our sport to watch at the Grand Challenge: Olympic
Gold Medalists, Jason Lezak and Ous Mellouli; plus National Team Members Michael
Klueh, Tanika Jameson, Lyndsay DePaul, Presly Bard, Keri Hehn, and Chloe Sutton. Besides our own Kirstie Chen
and Samantha Shellem there were eleven other National Junior Team members at
the meet.
