the first time in her second place finish in the 200 free, 1:49.2.

The high school aged swimmers of the Armada put their
plentiful talent on display at the 2009 CIF Swimming Championships this past weekend at
the
Mt SAC College pool.
In Division 4, Henry Shieh and Madeline Chavira started the
show off with nice performances. Henry, a junior at San Dimas High finished 5th
in the 200 IM in a 2:05.7 and 11th in the 100 Fly, 58.03.
Madeline, a freshman at St Josephs won the consolation finals of the 500 free
with a 5:34.0 and placed 12th in the 200 free with her best time, 2:06.50.
In Division 3, the Armada had a large number of athletes
helping their schools to score a bundle of points. Katie Andersen, a
junior at La Serna, finished 7th in the 50 Free (25.38) and 10th
in the 100 Free (55.59). Her teammate at La Serna, Sandrine Urias had a nice
meet, scoring well in both the 100 breast, 7th (1:10.68), and 13th in the 200
IM. Freshman Kiersten Shew, the third La Serna athlete from Armada, likewise was
a big part of a great meet for La Serna. Kiersten was 10th in the 100 fly
(1:01.76) and an outstanding 5th in the 100 back (1:01.54). All three girls
figured prominently on the La Serna relays that helped the La Serna women to a
fifth place team finish.
Representing Whittier High,
Jessica Marsh may have had the best meet of all the Armada athletes in the CIF
Championship series, posting lifetime best times in the 100 back (57.40) and
breaking the tough 1 minute 50 second barrier in the 200 free with a 1:49.21.
Jessica was second in both events. Jessica's 200 time was the second
fastest time in all CIF Divisions combined. Jessica's sister Lisa helped
the Whittier cause as well. Lisa was 12th in the 200 IM (2:12.58) and won
the consolation finals for a ninth place finish (1:02.50).
Kirstie Chen, who remains in hard training as she prepares
for the World Championship Trials in July, was still the class of the field in
her events. Kirstie set a CIF Division 3 record in the 200 IM, winning in
an impressive 2:01.25. She also finished second in the 100 fly, 55.73.
Armada swimmers were likewise well represented on the La
Serna Boys team. Dennis Cassidy competed in the 200 and 500 free for La Serna.
Dennis moved way up the psych sheet to finish fifth In both events and post
sectional qualifying times in both (1:47.18 and 4:49.48 respectively). Senior
Daniel Mendoza also scored for La Serna in the 500 free adding valuable points
to the La Serna men's 3rd place finish. Kazu Omori, a sophomore at La Serna,
finished off the fine swimming for the our Armada athletes at the division 3
level. Kazu, who also swims for La Serna, helped two of his school's free
relays to top eight finishes and added a 7th place finish in the individual 50
free (22.40). Huero Vidal also participated in the 500 free, representing
Whittier High School.
Moving to Division 2, Joel Ramirez, representing Sonora High School, improved
upon his 6th place seed in the 50 Free to finish 3rd in an impressive
21.2, while teammate John Chang broke the 2 minute barrier for the first time in
the 200 IM (1:59.85). John's sister, freshman Nikki Chang, had a very successful
campaign representing Sonora for her first time, placing 4th in the 500 free
(5:02.0) and sixth in the 200 free (154.0). Tim Wang and Tina Wang represented Troy High School
in the D2 Prelims, Tina in the 100 breast and 200 IM and TIm in the 100 back and
the 50 free.
Also representing
Troy
High School was
Josh Stedman who sprinted to a 22.48 in the 50 free and a 16th place finish in the 100 Back
(56.48). Penninsula high standouts Michael Mayfield and Cory Mayfield also
made their presence known at the meet. Michael was 10th in the 200 free
(1:44.29), while freshman Cory Mayfield finished 16th in the 200 IM (2:00.1).
The third Armada swimmer to final in the 200 IM was Matt Chong, representing La
Habra High. Matt finished 13th in the IM (200.2) and added a 7th place standing
in the 100 breast (1:00.04). Jaye Chang also competed in the 500 free posting a
best time 453.0.
The highest finish for the Armada swimmers in Division 2 was posted by Kylie
Garcia, representing Rowland High School. Kylie was second in the 100 fly,
posting a lifetime best time of 54.9.
The lone competitor for
the Armada in Division I was Maddie Golison. Maddie had a lifetime best in
the 200 IM, 2:09.95, finishing in 15th place. Maddie also swam the 100
fly, 58.60, and finished in 16th.
When all was said and done the Armada
had twenty-five athletes compete in the CIF Championship meet. There
combined efforts produced 44 lifetime best times, a tremendous performance.
